Many E60 M5s are summer cars. Storing one properly protects the engine, gearbox and electronics.
Before storage
- Change the oil so old, acidic oil does not sit in the engine.
- Fill the fuel tank to reduce condensation.
- Wash and dry the car thoroughly, including underneath.
- Inflate tyres slightly above normal pressure to reduce flat spots, or use tyre cradles.
The battery
The E60's electronics need a healthy battery. Connect a quality maintenance charger designed for long-term use. Low voltage is a common cause of electronic faults and SMG problems after storage.
Where to store
A dry, ventilated garage is ideal. Use a breathable car cover. Avoid sealing the car in plastic, which traps moisture.
Waking it up
- Check fluid levels and tyre pressures.
- Start the engine and let it idle briefly, then drive gently until fully warm.
- Test the brakes carefully — discs may have surface rust.
- Check for warning messages before driving hard.
