Most E60 M5s were delivered with SMG III, a seven-speed automated manual gearbox. It is a conventional manual gearbox with a single clutch, operated by a hydraulic system instead of the driver's left foot.
How it works
SMG stands for Sequential M Gearbox. A hydraulic unit with its own pump and pressure accumulator operates the clutch and moves the gear selector. The driver chooses gears using paddles on the steering wheel or the gear lever, or lets the system shift automatically.
Because it uses a single clutch, there is a short interruption of drive during each shift. At high engine speed and in the fastest modes the shifts are quick and firm; at low speed in the gentle modes they are slower and softer.
Drivelogic
SMG III offers a range of shift programs (often referred to as Drivelogic). The sequential (S) mode lets the driver change gear manually with different shift speeds, while the automated (D) mode chooses gears on its own with different levels of urgency. Selecting the right program for the situation makes a big difference to how the car feels.
Driving it smoothly
- Lift slightly during upshifts in the slower programs, just as you would with a manual — the shift becomes much smoother.
- Use a faster program for spirited driving and a slower program in town.
- Don't hold the car on a slope with the throttle; use the brake. This reduces clutch wear.
- Avoid long, slow creeping in traffic where possible, as it also loads the clutch.
Launch control
SMG III includes a launch-control function for maximum acceleration from a standstill. It is impressive, but it puts a lot of stress on the clutch and drivetrain, so most owners use it rarely, if at all.
SMG or manual?
A six-speed manual was offered for the North American market from 2007. Some drivers prefer its simplicity and engagement; others prefer SMG for its fast shifts and the way it suits the high-revving V10. Both are part of the E60 story, and condition and maintenance history matter more than the type of gearbox.
