E60 M5 Maintenance Checklist

6 min readBy Bimmer Garage

A practical maintenance checklist for the BMW M5 E60 and its S85 V10: oil, warm-up, bearings, throttle actuators, SMG, cooling, brakes and more.

Keeping an E60 M5 healthy is mostly about consistency: the right fluids, sensible driving habits and dealing with small issues before they become big ones. Use this checklist as a starting point and adapt it with your specialist.

Driving habits

  • Warm up properly. Wait until the oil is fully up to temperature before using high rpm. The rev-limit indicator on the tachometer helps show when the engine is ready.
  • Use the revs regularly once warm. The engine is designed for it.
  • Cool down after hard driving with a few minutes of gentle driving.

Engine

  • Change the engine oil more frequently than the longest factory intervals, using the specified grade.
  • Discuss a preventative connecting-rod bearing replacement with your specialist.
  • Monitor oil level regularly — high-revving engines can use some oil.
  • Check throttle actuators and their gears if warning messages appear.
  • Replace spark plugs and inspect ignition coils at sensible intervals.

Cooling

  • Inspect hoses, the expansion tank and the radiator for leaks or age.
  • Replace coolant according to the recommended schedule.

SMG III

  • Have the clutch wear and system values checked during services.
  • Keep the hydraulic fluid in good condition and listen for the pump running excessively.
  • Make sure the battery is healthy — low voltage can upset the SMG system.

Chassis

  • Brake fluid every two years; inspect discs and pads regularly.
  • Check bushings, control arms and wheel alignment.
  • Use quality tyres in the correct sizes front and rear.

Electrics

A strong, correctly registered battery is essential on this car. Many seemingly random electronic faults trace back to low voltage.
