The S85 V10 has ten individual throttle bodies, moved by two electric actuators — one per cylinder bank. They are central to the engine's sharp response.
How they work
When you press the accelerator, the engine computer commands each actuator to open its bank of throttles to an exact angle. Position sensors report back, and the system constantly compares the two banks to keep them synchronised.
Typical symptoms
- Engine warning light and reduced power (limp mode).
- Fault codes related to throttle position or actuator plausibility.
- Hesitation or uneven response.
Causes
Common causes include wear of the internal gears, dirty or stiff throttle linkages, and electrical connection issues. A low battery voltage can also trigger faults.
Diagnosis and repair
Read the fault codes with suitable diagnostic equipment first. Cleaning and adjusting the linkages may help. If an actuator itself is faulty, it can be repaired or replaced; after work, the throttles usually need to be adapted with diagnostic software.
