For a high-revving engine like the S85, oil is not just a service item — it is protection.
Specification
BMW specified a 10W-60 oil for the S85 V10. Many owners stick with that grade and a product approved for BMW M engines. Check your service documentation for the exact approval.
Change intervals
The factory interval was based on the car's condition-based service system. Many enthusiasts change oil more often than the system suggests — for example once a year or at shorter mileage intervals, and more often if the car is used hard or on track.
Checking the level
The E60 M5 uses an electronic oil level sensor, read through the iDrive display. Check it regularly with the engine warm and the car on level ground. High-revving engines can consume some oil, so top up with the same specification.
Oil analysis
Sending a small sample to a laboratory at each change shows trends in wear metals and contamination. It is an inexpensive way to monitor engine health, especially with regard to rod bearings.
