When you look for a used BMW, you will find cars offered by private sellers, independent dealers, BMW-approved dealers and specialists. Each option has advantages and risks. Understanding them helps you choose the right car and the right level of protection.

Buying from a private seller

Advantages:

  • Lower prices in many cases, because there is no dealer margin.
  • Direct contact with the owner, who can tell you how the car was used and maintained.
  • Enthusiast-owned cars are often found privately, with complete records and careful maintenance.

Risks:

  • Fewer legal protections in many countries. A private sale is often sold as seen.
  • No warranty, unless one is transferred from the manufacturer.
  • More responsibility for you: checking ownership, outstanding finance and the car's history.

A private sale works best when you are well prepared, bring an experienced friend or arrange an independent inspection.

Buying from an independent dealer

Advantages:

  • More consumer protection than a private sale in many countries.
  • Choice and convenience: several cars in one place and help with paperwork.
  • A dealer warranty may be available.

Risks:

  • Quality varies. Some dealers know BMWs very well, others simply sell what they buy at auctions.
  • Warranties can be limited. Read exactly what is covered, especially engine and gearbox parts.

Buying from a BMW-approved dealer or specialist

Advantages:

  • Approved used car programmes usually include checks, a warranty and roadside assistance.
  • Specialists often know the common issues of specific M models and can show detailed preparation work.

Risks:

  • Higher prices. You pay for the preparation, warranty and peace of mind.
  • Less room for negotiation.

The checks are the same

Whoever sells the car, the basic checks never change: service history, ownership documents, mileage records, condition and a test drive. Never skip them because a seller seems trustworthy or because a dealer looks professional.

Payment and paperwork

Pay with a traceable method, get a written receipt or contract and make sure all keys, documents and service records are handed over. Never pay a deposit for a car you have not seen in person.
