A professional pre-purchase inspection is one of the best investments you can make when buying a used BMW. It can reveal problems that are not visible on a short test drive and give you a stronger position when discussing the price.
Why an inspection is worth it
Even an experienced buyer can miss things such as hidden accident repairs, early signs of engine wear or stored fault codes. An independent specialist sees many cars of the same type and knows where to look. The cost is small compared with the price of a single major repair.
How to arrange one
- Choose an independent specialist, ideally one who knows the model and engine.
- Ask the seller for permission early. A genuine seller usually agrees. A refusal is a warning sign.
- Agree on the location: at the specialist's workshop, at the seller's address or with a mobile inspector.
- Ask what is included and how long it takes.
What the report should cover
A good inspection report includes:
- Bodywork: paint thickness readings, panel gaps, signs of repair and rust.
- Underside: leaks, corrosion, suspension and exhaust condition.
- Engine and gearbox: cold start, noises, smoke, leaks and fluid condition.
- Fault memory: a full diagnostic scan, including stored and historic codes.
- Brakes and tyres: wear, age and matching tyres.
- Electrics and equipment: every function tested.
- Road test by the inspector, with notes on drivability.
- Photos of all findings.
Model-specific checks
Ask the inspector to check the known weak points of the model. Our blog buying guides list common issues for many BMWs, and members in this forum can add model-specific tips.
Using the results
No used car is perfect. Separate the findings into safety issues, items that need attention soon and normal wear. Use the report to decide whether to buy, to agree on repairs before collection or to discuss the price fairly.
