M3 E46 vs E92 is a question many enthusiasts ask when they look for a naturally aspirated M3. Both cars rev past 8,000 rpm, both are wonderful to drive and both are on their way to becoming classics. But one has a 3.2-litre straight-six, the other a 4.0-litre V8.
In this comparison we look at the engines, gearboxes, performance, size and weight, reliability, running costs and character, to help you decide which M3 is right for you.
M3 E46 vs E92 at a glance
The E46 M3 was built from 2000 to 2006 as a coupé and a convertible. It uses the S54 3.2-litre straight-six with 343 hp and a six-speed manual or the SMG II sequential gearbox. For many fans, it is the definitive M3: compact, beautifully proportioned and with one of the best six-cylinder engines ever made.
The E92 M3 coupé was built from 2007 to 2013, alongside the E90 saloon and the E93 convertible. It uses the S65 4.0-litre V8 with 420 hp, a six-speed manual or the seven-speed M DCT dual-clutch gearbox. It is the only M3 with a V8.
Both are rear-wheel drive, both have naturally aspirated engines that rev to more than 8,000 rpm, and both are among the last M cars without turbochargers.
The E46 feels smaller, lighter and more analogue. The E92 is faster, more refined and more modern, with a very special sound.
Engines: S54 vs S65
The S54 produces 343 hp at 7,900 rpm and 365 Nm at 4,900 rpm. It has six individual throttle bodies and high-pressure double VANOS. It pulls well from low rpm and becomes really exciting above 5,000 rpm, with a hard, metallic sound.
The S65 V8 makes 420 hp at 8,300 rpm and 400 Nm at 3,900 rpm. It is closely related to the V10 of the M5 E60, with individual throttle bodies and a redline of 8,400 rpm. It revs freely and sounds deep at low rpm and like a racing engine at the top.
In everyday driving, the V8 feels stronger, with more torque across the rev range. The straight-six feels more direct and mechanical. Both engines love revs and both are among the best naturally aspirated engines of their time.
Both also have similar weak points: rod bearings can wear on both engines, and specialists recommend checking them on higher-mileage cars.
Gearboxes and performance
The E46 was offered with a six-speed manual and the SMG II. The manual is the favourite of most enthusiasts today. The SMG II is fast but can feel abrupt in town, and its hydraulic pump is a known point to check.
The E92 offers a six-speed manual and the seven-speed M DCT, a dual-clutch gearbox that is smoother and faster than the SMG. The DCT is very popular and makes the E92 easier to live with every day.
On performance, the E92 is clearly quicker: about 4.8 seconds to 100 km/h with the manual and about 4.6 seconds with DCT, compared with about 5.2 seconds for the E46. On a fast road, the V8's extra power and torque are very noticeable.
But the E46 never feels slow. Its lower weight and smaller size make it feel agile and connected, which is a big part of its appeal.
Size, weight and driving feel
The E46 M3 is the more compact car. It weighs around 1,570 kg in coupé form with a manual gearbox, and it feels light on its feet, with very direct steering and a lot of feedback.
The E92 is larger and heavier, at around 1,650 kg, despite its carbon fibre roof. It has a more refined chassis, a more comfortable ride and more space inside. At the limit it is very balanced and forgiving, but it feels more like a grand tourer than the E46.
Both cars have hydraulic steering, which gives a natural feel that many drivers miss in newer M cars with electric steering.
If you want the most intense, raw driving experience on a small road, the E46 is hard to beat. If you want a fast car for longer trips that is still very exciting, the E92 is the better choice.
Reliability and known issues
Both cars are reliable when maintained properly, but both need knowledgeable care.
On the E46 M3, the main points are the rod bearings, the VANOS system, the rear subframe mounting area, which can crack on some cars, the SMG pump and general age-related wear on suspension and cooling parts.
On the E92 M3, the main points are the rod bearings, the throttle actuators, the condition of the DCT and normal wear on suspension and brakes. The V8 is also more expensive to repair because it is more complex.
For both cars, a complete service history and a pre-purchase inspection by an M specialist are essential. Cars with documented rod bearing replacements and subframe reinforcements, in the case of the E46, are worth paying more for.
Running costs and values
The E92 usually costs more to run. It uses more fuel, has bigger brakes and tyres and more expensive parts. The E46 is cheaper to maintain, although it still needs the care and budget of a performance car.
Values have risen for both. The best E46 M3s, especially manual coupés in good colours and the CSL, have become very desirable. The E92 is following, especially manual cars and special versions such as the Competition models and the GTS.
From a buyer's point of view, both cars are now seen as modern classics. Buying a good example and maintaining it well is likely to be a sensible decision for either model.
The final choice is personal. Drive both if you can: the sound of the straight-six at 8,000 rpm and the howl of the V8 are both unforgettable, but they speak to different people.
