Few cars mix practicality and drama like the BMW M5 Touring of the E61 generation: a family estate with a 5.0-litre V10 that revs to 8,250 rpm.
A rare idea
BMW had built an M5 Touring once before, in the E34 era. For the E60 generation it returned in 2007 as the E61 M5 Touring, sharing the saloon's S85 V10, SMG III gearbox and chassis technology. It was mainly sold in Europe and was never officially offered in North America.
What is different?
- Body: the estate shape with a large load area and a split tailgate with an opening rear window.
- Weight: the Touring is somewhat heavier than the saloon, which slightly blunts acceleration, but the character remains the same.
- Rear suspension: self-levelling air suspension at the rear helps the car cope with loads.
- Engine and gearbox: identical 507 hp V10 and seven-speed SMG III.
Why it is collectible
Production numbers were small — roughly a thousand cars are commonly quoted — and the combination of a naturally aspirated V10 with an estate body is unlikely to be repeated. Good examples are valued highly by enthusiasts.
Buying advice
Everything in our buying guide applies. In addition, check the rear air suspension for leaks or sagging after the car has been parked, and inspect the tailgate mechanisms and electrics.
