A warning light came on: where to start before you post

Warning lights and messages cause a lot of worry, but most of them follow a simple logic. Before you post a question, these steps help you understand how urgent the problem is and collect the information other members will ask for.

Red or yellow: understand the urgency

BMW uses colours to show how serious a warning is:

  • Red warnings mean stop as soon as it is safe. Examples include high coolant temperature, low oil pressure and serious brake system faults. Continuing to drive can cause major damage or be dangerous.
  • Yellow warnings mean that a fault has been detected and should be checked soon. You can often continue carefully, but the problem should not be ignored.

Many BMWs also show a text message in the instrument cluster or in iDrive. Read the full message: it often tells you exactly what to do.

Check the simple things first

Some warnings have simple causes that you can check yourself:

  • Oil level: a low oil level warning simply means oil must be added. Use the correct BMW-approved oil.
  • Coolant level: check only when the engine is cold. Never open a hot cooling system.
  • Tyre pressure: a tyre pressure warning can be a slow puncture or a temperature change. Check the pressures and reset the system after correcting them.
  • Fuel cap: on some older models, a loose fuel cap can trigger an emissions warning.
  • Battery: a weak battery can cause many strange electronic warnings on modern BMWs.

Read the fault memory

For engine and drivetrain warnings, the next step is to read the fault codes. A BMW-capable diagnostic tool or a specialist can read them. The codes show which system reported the problem, for example a misfire on a specific cylinder or a sensor fault.

Write down the code and the description exactly. Clearing codes without fixing the cause usually means the warning will return.

Note the circumstances

When you post, describe:

  • Which light or message appeared, with its colour.
  • Whether the car felt different: power loss, vibration, noise.
  • Whether the engine was cold or warm and what you were doing at that moment.
  • Any recent work on the car.

When to stop immediately

Stop the car as soon as it is safe if you see a red warning, smell fuel or burning, see smoke, notice heavy vibration or lose braking or steering assistance. Call for assistance if needed. A forum answer can wait; your safety cannot.
