An engine temperature warning is one of the most important messages a BMW can show. Acting correctly in the first minutes can prevent serious engine damage. This topic explains what to do on the road and what to check before asking for help.

What to do immediately

When a red temperature warning appears or the temperature rises quickly:

  • Reduce load at once. Drive gently and avoid high engine speeds.
  • Find a safe place to stop as soon as possible and switch off the engine if the warning stays red.
  • Do not open the bonnet if you see steam escaping strongly. Wait until it calms down.
  • Never open the coolant expansion tank while the engine is hot. The system is under pressure and hot coolant can cause serious burns.

A yellow warning or a message about coolant level means the problem should be checked soon, but the urgency is lower. Read the full message in the instrument cluster.

Do not continue driving with a red warning

Driving with an overheating engine can damage the cylinder head, the head gasket and other parts within a short time. Calling for assistance is much cheaper than an engine repair.

What to check when the engine is cold

After the engine has cooled down completely:

  • Coolant level in the expansion tank. Many BMWs have a float in the tank or show the level electronically.
  • Visible leaks: wet spots, dried coolant residue, often white or coloured, around hoses, the radiator, the water pump and the expansion tank.
  • Hoses and connections: cracked hoses or loose clamps.
  • Under the car: drips of coolant after the car has been parked.

Common causes on BMWs

Typical causes include a failing electric water pump or thermostat on many modern engines, a cracked expansion tank or hose, a radiator leak, a faulty fan or air trapped in the system after a repair. The blog's guide to BMW cooling system problems explains these parts in more detail.

What to include in your topic

When you ask for help, post your model, engine, mileage, the exact message, what the temperature did, how far you drove after the warning and what you found during your checks. Mention recent work on the cooling system.

Topping up

If you need to add coolant to reach a workshop, use the correct BMW-approved coolant mixed as specified. Water alone can help in an emergency, but the system should be refilled and bled correctly afterwards.

Most importantly: never ignore a red temperature warning.
