Driving to a car show, a famous circuit or a club meet in another country is a memorable experience. It takes more planning than a local meet, but good preparation makes the trip relaxed and safe. This topic covers the main points.

Documents

Check the requirements of every country you will drive through. Typical items include:

  • Driving licence, and an international driving permit if required.
  • Vehicle registration document.
  • Insurance confirmation that covers the countries you will visit.
  • Breakdown cover valid abroad.
  • Passport or ID card.

Local rules and equipment

Many countries require specific items in the car, such as a warning triangle, reflective vests, a first aid kit or spare bulbs. Some cities have low-emission zones that need a sticker or registration. Some countries require headlight adjustment when you drive on the other side of the road. Check official government travel advice for each country before you leave.

Prepare the car

  • Service the car if anything is due soon.
  • Check tyres, including tread, pressures and condition.
  • Check fluid levels.
  • Test all lights.
  • Pack a small kit: tyre inflator, phone charger, torch and basic tools.

Plan the route

Plan fuel or charging stops, especially for electric BMWs. Allow for breaks every two hours. Many members enjoy planning a scenic route, but always respect local speed limits and traffic rules.

Travelling in a group

If you travel with other members, agree on meeting points rather than driving in close convoy. Use a messaging group to keep in touch, but never use your phone while driving.

At the event

Follow the event rules and respect the local community. You are representing the club and the BMW community abroad.

Share your trip

Reply below with trips you have done or are planning. Tips about documents, routes and events abroad are very helpful for members planning their first trip.

It also helps to keep digital and paper copies of your documents, to know the local emergency number and to save the contact details of your breakdown cover before you leave. Rules change, so always check official sources shortly before the trip rather than relying on old forum replies.
