Showing your BMW at a car show or a club display is a great way to meet other owners and share your passion. Good preparation makes the day relaxed and helps your car look its best. Here is a simple plan that works for first-time exhibitors and regular visitors alike.
A week before the show
- Read the event information. Check arrival times, entry rules, parking areas and what is allowed on the stand.
- Plan the cleaning. A thorough wash, decontamination and a coat of wax or sealant are best done a few days before, not the night before.
- Check the car. Tyre pressures, fluid levels and a quick look for leaks avoid problems on the way.
- Prepare an information card with the model, year, engine and a few interesting facts or modifications. Visitors love to read about the car.
The night before
- Clean the interior. Vacuum carpets, clean the glass and remove personal items from the cabin.
- Clean the wheels and tyres and apply a non-greasy tyre dressing.
- Pack a small kit: quick detailer, microfibre cloths, glass cleaner, a soft brush and a bag for rubbish.
- Pack for yourself: water, a folding chair, sun protection or a rain jacket.
On the day
- Arrive early. It gives you time to park calmly and wipe off the dust from the journey.
- Follow the marshals. They organise parking and keep the event safe.
- Drive slowly in the show area and never rev the engine or spin the wheels.
- Position the car carefully. Front wheels slightly turned, windows clean and the information card on the dashboard or a stand.
- Decide what visitors may do. Many owners open the bonnet but keep the doors closed. A small sign asking people not to touch is perfectly acceptable.
Talking to visitors
People will ask questions about the engine, the colour and the history of the car. Share what you know and enjoy the conversations. Be careful about sharing personal details such as where you live or where the car is parked at night.
Leaving the show
Wait until the organisers allow cars to leave and drive out calmly. Spectators remember the cars that leave quietly as much as those that look great.
After the show
Share your photos in Photos & builds or in the event topic, and tell members what you learned. Did you win an award, find a useful detailing product or meet another owner of the same model? Your experience helps others prepare for their first show.
