When an electrical item stops working, such as a socket, the horn or the rear window heating, a blown fuse is one of the first things to check. This topic explains how to find and check fuses safely on a BMW.
Where are the fuses?
The fuse box location depends on the model and generation. On many BMWs you will find:
- A fuse box in the glovebox area or behind a panel in the front footwell.
- A fuse and relay box in the boot, often near the battery on cars with a rear-mounted battery.
- High-current fuses near the battery or in the engine bay.
The owner's handbook shows the exact location. Inside the fuse box cover or in the handbook there is usually a chart showing which fuse protects which circuit.
Safety first
- Switch off the ignition and remove the key or move it away from the car on keyless cars before working on fuses.
- Never replace a fuse with a higher rating. The rating protects the wiring from overheating.
- Do not touch high-current fuses or cables near the battery unless you know exactly what you are doing.
- On hybrid and electric BMWs, never touch any orange high-voltage cables or components.
How to check a fuse
- Find the correct fuse using the chart.
- Use the plastic fuse puller, if supplied, to remove it.
- Look at the metal strip inside. If it is broken or burnt, the fuse has blown.
- Replace it with a new fuse of exactly the same rating and type.
A fuse tester or a multimeter gives a more reliable result than a visual check.
If the new fuse blows again
A fuse that blows again points to a fault in the circuit, such as a damaged wire, a faulty component or water ingress. Do not keep replacing it. Start a topic with your model, the fuse number, the circuit and what happened, or ask an auto electrician to inspect it.
Relays
Relays are electrically operated switches for high-current items such as fans and pumps. They can fail, but testing them correctly needs care. Swapping a relay with an identical one from a non-critical circuit is a simple test, but check the part numbers first.
