If you maintain your own BMW, a good maintenance log is one of the most valuable things you can keep. It helps you plan future work, diagnose problems and prove to a future buyer that the car has been looked after properly.
Why a log matters
Workshop invoices show what a professional did, but DIY work often leaves no record. Without notes, it is easy to forget when the oil was changed, which brand of brake pads you fitted or whether the coolant was replaced. A clear log answers these questions in seconds.
What to record after every job
For each job, write down:
- Date and mileage.
- What was done: for example, oil and filter change, front brake pads, spark plugs.
- Parts used: brand, part number and quantity. Keep the receipts.
- Fluids used: type, approval and amount, such as the oil specification or the coolant type.
- Torque values you used for important fasteners, such as wheel bolts and brake caliper carriers.
- Observations: anything you noticed, like a small leak, worn bushes or uneven tyre wear.
- Photos: before and after photos of the job.
Paper or digital?
Both work. A notebook kept in the car is simple and always available. A spreadsheet or notes app is easy to search and back up. The garage section of your member profile also has a service log, where you can record work on each car.
Plan the next jobs
A log makes it easy to plan ahead. Add a list of upcoming jobs with an approximate mileage or date, such as brake fluid every two years or spark plugs at a certain interval. Your car's Condition Based Service display shows many of these, and our blog explains how it works.
Using the log when you sell
When the time comes to sell, a well-kept DIY log with receipts and photos builds trust. Buyers can see what was done, when and with which parts. Remove personal details, such as your address, from any documents you share.
