The My BMW app connects your smartphone with your car. It lets you check the vehicle status, lock and unlock remotely, pre-condition the cabin, send destinations to the navigation and, on electric and plug-in hybrid models, manage charging.

The available functions depend on the model, equipment, market and active services. In this guide we explain the main features of the My BMW app, how to set it up, useful everyday uses and what to know about privacy and security.

Setting up the My BMW app

To use the My BMW app, you need:

  • A BMW ID account.
  • A compatible BMW with connectivity services.
  • The car linked to your account, usually by entering the VIN and confirming ownership, for example with a code shown in the car.

Once connected, the app shows your car and the available functions. The first owner should register as the main user, and other drivers can be added where the system allows.

When you buy a used BMW, make sure the previous owner has removed the car from their account. Otherwise you may not be able to register it, and the previous owner could still see information about the car. A BMW service partner can help if the previous owner cannot be reached.

Remote functions

Typical remote functions include:

  • Lock and unlock the car.
  • Flash lights or sound the horn to find the car in a car park.
  • Climate control: heat or cool the cabin before you leave, on many models.
  • Vehicle finder: show the car's location on a map.
  • Remote 3D View on some models, which shows images of the car's surroundings from the parking cameras.

These functions are especially useful in winter and summer. Pre-conditioning the cabin while an electric car is charging also saves battery range.

Vehicle status

The app shows useful information, such as:

  • Fuel level or battery charge and estimated range.
  • Mileage and service status.
  • Door, window and lock status.
  • Tyre pressure, on many models. Our article on BMW tyre pressure monitoring explains the system.
  • Warning messages and check control information.

This lets you check, for example, whether you locked the car or closed the windows.

The app can also send notifications, for example when the car has been left unlocked, when a service is due or when charging is complete on an electric model. Check the notification settings so you receive the information that matters to you without unnecessary messages.

You can search for destinations in the app and send them to the car's navigation system. When you start the car, the route is ready.

For electric BMWs, the app can plan routes with charging stops and show available charging stations. This is especially useful on long trips. Our article on BMW Apple CarPlay and Android Auto explains other ways to use your phone's apps in the car.

Service and maintenance

The app shows upcoming service items based on BMW Condition Based Service. Our article on BMW Condition Based Service explains how the system works. In many markets, you can request a service appointment with your preferred BMW service partner directly through the app.

Keeping track of service needs helps maintain the car's value and warranty.

Digital Key and sharing

On compatible models, the app can activate a Digital Key on your smartphone, allowing you to unlock and start the car without the physical key. Digital Keys can be shared with family members, sometimes with restrictions such as limited speed or audio volume.

Our article on BMW Comfort Access explains keyless systems and how to keep them secure.

Privacy and security

The app uses data from the car, such as location and vehicle status. To protect your privacy:

  • Use a strong password for your BMW ID and enable additional security where available.
  • Review data and privacy settings in the app and the car.
  • Remove users and phones that no longer need access.
  • Unlink the car from your account before selling it, and perform a factory reset of personal data in the car. Our guide on how to sell your BMW explains this step.

Never share your login details or verification codes with anyone.

Troubleshooting

If the app does not connect to the car:

  • Check that the car has mobile reception, for example not in an underground car park.
  • Make sure the services are active for your car and market.
  • Update the app and the phone's software.
  • Log out and log in again.
  • Check whether the car has received a software update. Our article on BMW Remote Software Upgrade explains updates.

If problems continue, your BMW service partner or customer support can check the connection.
