The BMW iX is BMW's electric flagship SUV, launched in 2021. It was designed from the start as an electric car, with a spacious lounge-like interior, advanced technology and a long range in its larger battery versions.

It is offered in several versions, including a high-performance M model. In this article we explain how the BMW iX is built, its versions, range and charging, its interior technology and what to consider when buying one.

BMW iX: a new kind of BMW

The iX was BMW's technology flagship for electric cars. Unlike some electric models based on existing petrol cars, it was designed as an electric vehicle from the start. This allowed a flat floor, a spacious cabin and a new approach to design.

Its large kidney grille is closed, because an electric car needs less cooling air, and it contains sensors for driver assistance systems. The design divides opinion, but the car has been praised for its comfort, quietness and technology.

The iX is similar in size to the X5, but its interior feels even more spacious thanks to the flat floor and the absence of a large centre tunnel. Rear passengers enjoy generous legroom, and the boot is large enough for family holidays. For many buyers, it is the most comfortable car in BMW's electric range.

Carbon Cage construction

The iX uses a mix of aluminium, high-strength steel and carbon fibre reinforced plastic, which BMW calls the Carbon Cage. This combination reduces weight and increases stiffness, which benefits both safety and driving dynamics.

The technology builds on BMW's experience with the i3 and i8. Our BMW i3 buying guide explains BMW's first carbon fibre electric car.

Versions and performance

At launch, the iX was offered in several versions, including:

  • xDrive40: the entry model with a smaller battery and shorter range.
  • xDrive50: a larger battery, more power and a much longer range.
  • M60: a high-performance version with more than 600 hp, developed with BMW M.

All versions have two electric motors and all-wheel drive. Names and outputs were updated later in production, so check the exact version of any car you consider.

The M60 combines very strong acceleration with the comfort of the standard car. The xDrive50 is often seen as the best balance between range, performance and price, while the xDrive40 suits drivers who mainly cover shorter distances.

Range and charging

Range depends on the version, battery, wheels, temperature and driving style. The versions with the larger battery offer a long range that makes long journeys practical.

The iX supports fast DC charging at high power, allowing a large share of the battery to be recharged in around half an hour at suitable chargers. At home, an AC wallbox is the most convenient option. Our article on how to charge an electric BMW explains charging in detail.

Interior and technology

The iX introduced several technologies to BMW:

  • A large curved display combining the instrument cluster and central screen.
  • A hexagonal steering wheel.
  • A new iDrive system with touch, voice and controller operation.
  • Advanced driver assistance. Our article on BMW Driving Assistant Professional explains these systems.
  • Optional Sky Lounge panoramic roof with switchable glass on some versions.
  • Premium audio systems.

The cabin feels spacious and calm, with comfortable seats and very low noise levels.

Driving experience

The iX is quiet, smooth and very fast, especially in the M60. Air suspension on many cars provides a comfortable ride, and rear-wheel steering is available on some versions to make the large SUV more manoeuvrable. Our article on BMW Integral Active Steering explains this system.

It is less sporty than an X5 M, but it offers effortless performance and comfort that suit long journeys. Many owners say it is one of the quietest cars they have driven.

Buying a used iX

When buying a used iX:

  • Check the battery health and remaining battery warranty.
  • Test charging with AC and, if possible, DC fast charging.
  • Check software status. Our article on BMW Remote Software Upgrade explains updates.
  • Test all technology, including displays, driver assistance and parking systems.
  • Check tyres, which wear faster on a heavy, powerful electric car.

Our complete checklist for buying a used BMW covers other checks.

Who the iX suits

The iX suits buyers who want a large, comfortable and technologically advanced electric SUV, with enough range for long trips in the larger battery versions. It is ideal for families who can charge at home.

Buyers who prefer a more traditional design or need towing capacity beyond the approved limits should compare it with the X5 and its plug-in hybrid version. Our article on BMW plug-in hybrids explains that alternative.
