The G07 X7 was launched in 2019 as the largest and most luxurious BMW SUV. It has three rows of seats, two-axle air suspension and much of the technology of the 7 Series.

A used G07 X7 can offer a lot of car for the money compared with a new one, but it is a complex and expensive vehicle. This buying guide explains the G07 X7 engines, versions, seating layouts and what to check before buying.

The flagship BMW SUV

The X7 was designed for markets that wanted a large luxury SUV with seven seats, especially the USA, the Middle East and China. It is built in Spartanburg, USA, and shares its platform and many parts with the G05 X5.

Our G05 X5 buying guide explains many of the shared components. The X7 is longer, taller and more spacious, with a focus on comfort rather than sportiness.

Engines

The G07 X7 was offered with several engines, depending on market:

  • xDrive40i: the B58 six-cylinder turbo petrol. Our article on N54 vs N55 vs B58 explains it.
  • xDrive30d and xDrive40d: six-cylinder diesels. Our article on the BMW B57 diesel explains them.
  • M50d: a high-output six-cylinder diesel in early cars in some markets.
  • M50i: a twin-turbo V8 petrol in early cars.
  • M60i: a V8 petrol after the 2022 facelift.

Later six-cylinder engines use 48-volt mild hybrid technology. The diesels are popular in Europe for their economy and towing ability.

Seats and space

Most X7s have seven seats in three rows, while some have six seats with two individual chairs in the middle row. The third row is usable for adults on shorter trips, which is rare in this class. Electric seat folding is available on many cars.

Check that all electric seat functions work, including folding and sliding. A broken seat motor can be an expensive repair.

Air suspension and chassis

The G07 X7 has air suspension on both axles as standard. It gives a smooth ride and can raise or lower the car. Some cars also have Integral Active Steering and active anti-roll control.

Check that the car sits level after standing overnight, that the suspension raises and lowers without warnings and that there are no knocks over bumps. Air suspension parts are expensive to replace.

The 2022 facelift

In 2022, the X7 received a facelift with split headlights, a new interior with the curved display and the latest iDrive, and updated engines. Facelift cars are more modern inside, while pre-facelift cars are usually cheaper. Both versions are spacious and comfortable.

When comparing cars, check the exact equipment rather than relying on the model name. Options such as the Sky Lounge panoramic roof, rear entertainment screens, Bowers & Wilkins audio, massage seats and the Executive Drive Pro chassis vary widely between cars and can make a big difference to comfort and value.

G07 X7 common issues

The X7 is a relatively new car, but points to check include:

  • Air suspension faults, including leaks and compressor wear.
  • Electronic faults that may be solved with software updates. Our article on BMW Remote Software Upgrade explains this.
  • V8 engines, which need careful maintenance and can consume oil. Our article on BMW oil consumption explains this.
  • AdBlue and DPF systems on diesel models. Our article on BMW AdBlue explains this.
  • Heavy tyre and brake wear on a large, heavy car.
  • Battery health, which is important for the many electronic systems. Our article on BMW battery drain explains this.

Running costs

The X7 is expensive to run. Fuel consumption is high on the V8 models, and tyres, brakes and insurance are costly. The diesels offer the best economy. Servicing is condition based, and an extended warranty can be worth considering on a used car.

Test drive checklist

On the test drive:

  • Test the air suspension in all height settings.
  • Check every seat motor and the third-row access.
  • Feel for vibration under braking.
  • Test all driver assistance systems and cameras.
  • Check that the panoramic roof and sunblinds work.
  • Read the fault memory.

Our complete checklist for buying a used BMW M car covers many checks that apply to any BMW.

G07 X7: points to remember

Choose a car with full BMW or specialist service history, completed recalls and software updates, and ideally some warranty remaining. Check the condition of the large alloy wheels and the leather. A pre-purchase inspection with a diagnostic check is strongly recommended on a car of this complexity.

Is the G07 X7 a good buy?

A well-maintained G07 X7 is a superb family car and long-distance cruiser, with real seven-seat space and outstanding comfort. The xDrive40i and the six-cylinder diesels are the most sensible choices, while the V8 models offer more performance at higher cost.

Budget carefully for running costs and buy the best documented car you can find.
