Ask any group of BMW enthusiasts about their favourite engine sound and you will get passionate answers. The smooth howl of a straight-six, the deep rumble of a V8 and the high-revving scream of the V10 all have their fans. This topic is for sharing yours.

The straight-six

BMW is famous for its straight-six engines. From the classic naturally aspirated sixes to the modern turbo units, they are known for smoothness and a distinctive sound that rises as the revs climb. Our blog has a history of the BMW straight-six.

The V8

BMW V8s have powered many M cars and luxury models. The high-revving naturally aspirated V8 of the E92 M3 is a favourite for many, while the twin-turbo V8s deliver huge torque with a deeper sound.

The V10

The V10 of the E60 M5 and E63 M6 was inspired by BMW's Formula 1 years. Its high-revving character and sound are still celebrated today.

Other favourites

Some members love the sound of the four-cylinder engines in classic M3s, the V12 in the E38 750i and the 8 Series, or the unique sound of modern electric BMWs with their designed driving sounds.

How to share sound safely

If you want to share a recording:

  • Record on private property or at a track day, never by revving or accelerating hard on public roads or in residential areas.
  • Keep it short and describe the car, engine and any exhaust changes.
  • Hide registration plates in videos.

Members should also remember that loud exhaust modifications may not be legal in every country, and they can make neighbours and venues unhappy with car events.

Vote with your reply

Reply below with your favourite BMW engine sound, the car it comes from and why you love it. Do you prefer the smooth six, the deep V8 or the screaming V10? Or is there another engine that deserves a mention?

If you have heard several engines in person, tell us how they compare. Sound is personal, and a description of what you like, such as the induction noise, the exhaust note or how the sound changes at high revs, helps other members understand your choice.
