Knowing how to clean Alcantara is important for any owner of a modern BMW M car. Alcantara is used on steering wheels, seats, door panels and headliners because it offers excellent grip and a sporty look.
It is a delicate material, though. Oils from your hands and dirt quickly make it shiny and flat, and the wrong products can damage it. In this guide we explain what Alcantara is, how to clean it safely, how to restore a shiny steering wheel and how to keep it looking new for longer.
What Alcantara is
Alcantara is a brand of synthetic microfibre material made from polyester and polyurethane. It has a soft, suede-like feel but is lighter and more durable than real suede. It is used widely in motorsport and performance cars because it offers grip, does not get as hot or cold as leather and looks sporty.
In BMW models, you find it on M steering wheels, sports seats, headliners and trim parts, often as part of M or BMW Individual packages. Our article on BMW Individual explains special interior options.
Why Alcantara gets dirty
The fibres of Alcantara stand up like a fine nap. When oils from skin, hand cream, sunscreen or food get into the fibres, they stick together and lie flat. This creates the shiny, matted look often seen on steering wheels and seat bolsters.
Dust and dirt also settle in the fibres. Regular light cleaning prevents build-up and is much easier than repairing a heavily soiled surface.
How to clean Alcantara: regular care
For light cleaning:
- Vacuum gently with a soft brush attachment to remove dust.
- Brush the surface lightly with a soft brush to lift the fibres.
- Wipe with a clean, slightly damp microfibre cloth, using water only or a cleaner designed for Alcantara.
- Let it dry naturally and brush lightly again to restore the nap.
Do this every few weeks for surfaces you touch often, such as the steering wheel. Always test any product on a hidden area first.
Use separate cloths for Alcantara and for other interior surfaces, because cloths used on plastics or glass may carry dressing or cleaner residues. Wash microfibre cloths without fabric softener, which leaves a coating that can transfer to the material. A small, soft upholstery brush or a clean, soft toothbrush works well for seams and stitching.
Cleaning a shiny steering wheel
An Alcantara M steering wheel often becomes shiny where your hands rest. To restore it:
- Spray a dedicated Alcantara cleaner onto a microfibre cloth or soft brush, not directly onto the wheel.
- Work gently in small areas, using light circular movements.
- Wipe away the dirt with a clean, slightly damp microfibre cloth.
- Repeat if needed, rather than using more pressure.
- Let it dry and brush gently to lift the fibres.
Avoid soaking the material, because moisture can reach the padding and the airbag area. Never use aggressive chemicals near the airbag cover.
Seats and headliners
Seat bolsters wear and get dirty from getting in and out. Clean them the same way as the steering wheel, with a dedicated cleaner and soft brush.
Headliners need extra care, because the material is glued to the roof lining. Use very little moisture and avoid rubbing hard, as this can loosen the glue and cause sagging. Dab stains gently instead of scrubbing.
What to avoid
- Leather cleaners and conditioners, which can clog the fibres. Our article on BMW leather care explains products for leather.
- All-purpose cleaners and solvents, which can discolour or damage the material.
- Too much water or steam cleaning at close range.
- Hard brushes that can pull out fibres.
- Hair dryers or heat guns to speed up drying.
When in doubt, use less product and less pressure.
Prevention tips
- Clean your hands before driving, especially after applying hand cream or sunscreen.
- Consider driving gloves for long trips or track days.
- Clean regularly to avoid build-up.
- Use a fabric protector designed for Alcantara, if recommended by the manufacturer.
- Protect from strong sunlight when parked for long periods, using a sunshade.
With regular, gentle care, Alcantara can stay soft and grippy for many years.
When cleaning is not enough
If the material is worn through, torn or permanently matted, cleaning cannot fix it. A specialist upholsterer can retrim a steering wheel or seat panel in new Alcantara or leather. This is common for high-mileage M cars.
When buying a used BMW, the condition of the steering wheel and seat bolsters is a good indicator of how the car was used. Our complete checklist for buying a used BMW M car covers the interior checks.
