The BMW wiper service position moves the wipers up from their parked position under the bonnet edge, so you can lift the arms and change the blades. On most modern BMWs, the wipers park so low that you cannot lift them without using this function.
Changing wiper blades is one of the easiest DIY jobs, but doing it without the service position can damage the bonnet or wiper arms. In this guide we explain how to activate the service position, how to change the blades, how to choose the right blades and how to look after them.
Why BMWs need a wiper service position
On many BMWs, the wipers rest in a low position, partly hidden under the rear edge of the bonnet. This reduces wind noise and improves aerodynamics and appearance.
If you try to lift the arms in this position, they can hit the bonnet and scratch the paint or bend the arms. The service position moves the wipers higher up the windscreen, where they can be lifted safely.
How to activate the BMW wiper service position
The procedure varies slightly by model, but on many BMWs it works like this:
- Close the bonnet completely.
- Switch the ignition on without starting the engine. On some models, the wipers must be switched off first.
- Press the wiper stalk down and hold it for a few seconds.
- The wipers move up into the service position.
On some older models, the procedure is slightly different, for example switching the ignition off and then holding the wiper stalk within a short time. Always check the owner's manual for your car. The service position is also useful in winter, so you can lift the wipers off the screen to prevent them from freezing.
Changing the front wiper blades
Once the wipers are in the service position:
- Lift the wiper arm carefully away from the windscreen.
- Release the blade by pressing the locking clip or button, depending on the blade type.
- Remove the old blade from the arm.
- Fit the new blade until it clicks into place.
- Lower the arm carefully onto the windscreen. Never let it snap back, because it can crack the glass.
- Repeat on the other side.
Place a soft cloth on the windscreen under the arm while working, in case it falls.
Returning the wipers to the park position
After changing the blades, the wipers usually return to their normal park position when you switch the ignition off and on again, or when you use the wipers. Check that both blades are seated correctly and that the wipers move smoothly across the glass.
Do not open the bonnet while the wipers are in the service position. On some models, the bonnet can hit the raised arms.
Changing the rear wiper blade
BMW Touring models and SUVs have a rear wiper. It usually does not need a service position. Lift the arm from the rear window, release the blade from the arm and fit the new one. Make sure the new blade has the correct length and fitting type.
Lower the arm gently onto the glass after fitting the blade.
Choosing the right wiper blades
Use blades designed for your exact model:
- Length: the driver and passenger sides often use different lengths.
- Fitting type: BMW uses different connectors on different models.
- Design: modern BMWs usually use flat aerodynamic blades.
- Quality: original BMW blades or quality aftermarket blades work best with the rain sensor.
Cheap blades can streak, squeak or lift at high speeds. On cars with a rain sensor, poor blades can also affect how the automatic wipers work.
When to replace wiper blades
Replace blades when:
- They leave streaks or unwiped areas.
- They squeak or judder across the glass.
- The rubber is cracked or damaged.
- They lift off the glass at high speed.
Many owners replace blades once a year, often before winter. Clean, effective wipers are essential for visibility and safety.
Care tips
- Clean the blades with a damp cloth to remove dirt.
- Clean the windscreen regularly, including the area under the parked wipers.
- Use the service position in winter to lift the wipers away from the glass and prevent freezing.
- Do not use the wipers on a frozen or dry windscreen. Use washer fluid and let the car defrost.
- Use quality washer fluid with frost protection in winter.
