Wrench and gear — BMW maintenance

The BMW starter motor turns the engine when you press the start button, until the engine runs on its own. On cars with Auto Start-Stop it works much more often than on older cars, and it is built for that.

When the starter begins to fail, the car may click, crank slowly or not start at all. In this guide we explain the symptoms of BMW starter motor problems, how to tell them apart from a weak battery, how the starter is tested and what replacement involves.

How the BMW starter motor works

The starter motor is a small but powerful electric motor mounted near the gearbox. When you press the start button, the car's electronics check the conditions, for example that the brake or clutch pedal is pressed, and then send current to a solenoid on the starter.

The solenoid does two things: it pushes a small gear, the pinion, into the teeth of the flywheel, and it switches the high current from the battery to the motor. The motor turns the engine until it starts. Then the pinion pulls back.

On cars with Auto Start-Stop, the starter is a reinforced version designed for many more starts. Our article on BMW Auto Start-Stop explains how the system decides when to stop and restart the engine.

Symptoms of BMW starter motor problems

Typical signs of a failing BMW starter motor are:

  • A single click when you press start, but the engine does not turn.
  • Slow or uneven cranking, even though the battery is charged.
  • Grinding or whirring noises when starting, which can mean the pinion is not engaging properly.
  • Intermittent starting, where the car sometimes starts normally and sometimes not.
  • The starter keeps running for a moment after the engine has started.
  • Messages about Auto Start-Stop being unavailable.

Starter problems often appear first when the engine is hot or very cold, because these conditions demand more from the starter.

Starter motor or battery?

Many starting problems are caused by the battery, not the starter. Before replacing the starter, check the battery:

  • Dashboard and lights dim strongly when you press start: often a weak battery.
  • No lights or electronics at all: a battery or main power connection problem.
  • Everything works normally but only one click: more likely the starter or its connections.

Modern BMWs need a healthy battery for all their electronics, and a weak battery can cause many strange faults. After replacing a battery, it must be registered with the car. Our articles on BMW battery registration and BMW battery drain explain this.

Also check the main cables and ground connections. A loose or corroded connection can make a healthy starter look faulty.

How a workshop tests the starter

A workshop will usually:

  • Test the battery under load to make sure it can deliver enough current.
  • Measure the voltage at the starter while cranking. A big voltage drop points to a cable or connection problem.
  • Read the fault memory, because the car's electronics log problems with the start signal and with Auto Start-Stop.
  • Listen and observe the starter during cranking.

If the voltage at the starter is correct but it still does not turn the engine properly, the starter itself is faulty.

Replacing a BMW starter motor

On many BMWs, the starter sits low on the engine near the gearbox and can be difficult to reach. On some six-cylinder and V8 models, the intake manifold or other parts must be removed first, which increases the labour time.

Choose a quality starter, either a genuine BMW part or a well-known brand. For cars with Auto Start-Stop, the replacement must be the reinforced type designed for start-stop.

Before working near the starter, disconnect the battery, because the main starter cable is always live. After the job, check that the cables are tight and the battery connections are clean. If the battery is replaced at the same time, register it with the car.

How long does a BMW starter motor last?

A starter motor can last for the life of the car, but it is a wear part. The brushes, the solenoid contacts and the pinion gradually wear. Many short trips with frequent starts increase wear, while long journeys reduce it.

Auto Start-Stop adds many starts, but the starter, battery and engine bearings on these cars are designed for it. If you prefer, you can switch Auto Start-Stop off for each journey with the button near the start button.

A healthy battery helps the starter too. A weak battery makes the starter work harder and longer, which increases wear on both. Our article on how to jump start a BMW explains what to do if the car does not start away from home.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my BMW starter motor is bad?

If the lights and electronics work normally but the engine only clicks, cranks slowly or grinds, the starter is a likely cause. A workshop can confirm it by measuring the voltage at the starter while cranking.

Can a weak battery look like a starter problem?

Yes. A weak battery is the most common reason for slow cranking or clicking. Always test the battery and its connections before replacing the starter.

Does Auto Start-Stop wear out the starter?

It adds many starts, but cars with Auto Start-Stop have a reinforced starter designed for this. You can switch the system off for each journey if you prefer.

Is replacing a BMW starter motor difficult?

It depends on the model. On some cars it is easy to reach, on others the intake manifold or other parts must be removed first, which makes the job longer and more expensive.

Can I jump start a BMW with a bad starter?

Jump starting helps only if the battery is the problem. If the starter itself is faulty, more current will not make it work.
