The G30 530d is the six-cylinder diesel version of the seventh-generation 5 Series, built from 2017 to 2023. It combines strong performance, low fuel consumption and excellent comfort, making it one of the best long-distance cars BMW has ever made.

It was offered as a saloon and as the G31 Touring, with rear-wheel drive or xDrive. In this buying guide we explain the engine, versions, the 2020 update, the points to check and what to look for when buying a G30 530d.

The G30 530d offers:

  • Strong torque and effortless performance.
  • Low fuel consumption for its size and power.
  • Excellent comfort and refinement on long journeys.
  • Advanced technology, including driver assistance systems.
  • Towing capability in many markets.

It is a favourite among drivers who cover long distances and want a car that combines speed, comfort and efficiency.

The G30 generation is also lighter and more refined than the previous F10, with a quieter cabin and better ride comfort. Many testers described it as one of the best executive saloons of its time, with an excellent balance between comfort and driving pleasure.

The B57 engine

The 530d uses the B57 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel. It produced around 265 hp at launch, and later versions with 48-volt mild hybrid technology produced around 286 hp in many markets.

The B57 is smooth, refined and generally reliable. It uses a diesel particulate filter and SCR with AdBlue. Our articles on the BMW B57 diesel, BMW DPF and BMW AdBlue explain these systems.

Drive and chassis

The 530d is available with rear-wheel drive or xDrive all-wheel drive. xDrive offers excellent traction in winter and on wet roads.

Many cars have adaptive suspension and Integral Active Steering, which steers the rear wheels for agility and stability. Our article on BMW Integral Active Steering explains it. The G31 Touring often has rear air suspension for consistent ride height when loaded.

The 2020 update

The G30 was updated around 2020 with:

  • Revised exterior styling, including new headlights and taillights.
  • Mild hybrid technology on the 530d.
  • Updated infotainment and driver assistance systems.

Updated cars are slightly more efficient and modern, but earlier cars can offer good value. Check the production date and equipment list to see exactly which features a car has.

G30 530d: points to check

The G30 530d is generally reliable, but check:

  • Service history and oil changes with the correct oil.
  • DPF and AdBlue warnings, especially on cars used for short trips.
  • Air suspension on the Touring.
  • Software updates for infotainment and assistance systems. Our article on BMW Remote Software Upgrade explains them.
  • Tyres, brakes and wheels, especially on larger wheel sizes.
  • Driver assistance cameras and sensors after windscreen or bumper repairs.

Equipment worth looking for

Popular options include:

  • Driving Assistant Professional. Our article on BMW Driving Assistant Professional explains it.
  • Head-Up Display.
  • Adaptive LED or Laserlight headlights.
  • Comfort seats and soft-close doors.
  • Parking Assistant Plus.
  • Harman Kardon or Bowers & Wilkins audio.

Well-equipped cars are more comfortable and often hold their value better. Comfort seats with massage and ventilation are especially appreciated on long trips.

Running costs

The 530d is economical for a fast, large saloon. On motorways, many owners achieve impressive fuel consumption, and its large tank gives a long range between stops. Insurance and servicing are higher than for a 520d, but lower than for petrol V8 or M models.

Costs to plan for include:

  • Tyres, which can be expensive on larger wheel sizes.
  • Brakes, especially on heavy xDrive and Touring models.
  • AdBlue refills between services.
  • Air suspension parts on high-mileage Touring models.

Our guide to BMW fuel economy explains how to get the best consumption, and our article on BMW Condition Based Service explains how service intervals are planned.

Test drive checklist

On the test drive:

  • Check for warning messages.
  • Test the gearbox and xDrive in slow turns.
  • Feel for vibration at motorway speeds.
  • Test driver assistance and parking systems.
  • Read the fault memory.

Our complete checklist for buying a used BMW covers other checks.

Is the G30 530d a good buy?

For drivers who cover long distances, the G30 530d is one of the best used cars available: fast, comfortable, efficient and well equipped. A car with full service history and recent software updates is a strong choice.

For mostly short trips, a petrol or plug-in hybrid 5 Series may suit better. Our article on BMW diesel or petrol explains how to decide. Our article on BMW extended warranty explains how to add peace of mind.
