Wrench and gear — BMW maintenance

BMW engine mounts hold the engine in place and absorb its vibrations. When they wear out, the car can vibrate at idle, clunk when pulling away and feel less precise when changing gear or accelerating.

Many BMWs have engine mounts filled with hydraulic fluid, and some M cars use active mounts that change their stiffness. In this guide we explain how engine and gearbox mounts work, the symptoms of wear, the causes and what to consider when replacing them.

What BMW engine mounts do

The engine and gearbox are connected to the body through mounts made of rubber and metal. They have two jobs:

  • Holding the engine in place under acceleration, braking and cornering.
  • Absorbing vibration so that it does not reach the cabin.

Most BMWs with longitudinal engines use two engine mounts and one or two gearbox mounts. Many modern BMWs use hydraulic mounts, which contain fluid to damp vibrations better than solid rubber. Some M models use active or electronically controlled mounts that become stiffer in sporty driving and softer at idle.

Symptoms of worn BMW engine mounts

Common symptoms include:

  • Vibration at idle, felt through the steering wheel, seats or floor, especially in Drive with the car stationary on automatic models.
  • A clunk when pulling away, changing gear or lifting off the throttle.
  • More engine movement when revving the engine with the bonnet open.
  • Vibrations at certain engine speeds that were not there before.
  • A less precise gear change on manual cars, because the engine moves more.
  • Visible oil or fluid around hydraulic mounts.

These symptoms can also come from other parts, such as driveshaft couplings, exhaust mounts or a worn dual-mass flywheel. Our article on the BMW dual-mass flywheel explains those symptoms.

Gearbox mounts

The gearbox mount supports the rear of the gearbox. When it wears, you may notice:

  • Clunks when changing gear or when switching between drive and reverse.
  • Vibration at certain speeds.
  • A vague feel under acceleration and when lifting off the throttle.

Gearbox mounts are often replaced together with engine mounts, especially on older cars, because they age at a similar rate.

Causes of wear

Engine mounts wear naturally with age and mileage. The rubber hardens and cracks, and hydraulic mounts can leak. Factors that accelerate wear include:

  • Oil leaks: oil dripping on rubber mounts softens and damages them. Our article on BMW oil leaks explains common leak points.
  • Heat: mounts close to the exhaust or turbochargers age faster.
  • Hard driving and launches: strong torque loads stress the mounts.
  • Engine tuning, which increases torque beyond the original design.
  • Age: rubber deteriorates even on low-mileage cars that stand for long periods.

Active engine mounts on M cars

Some BMW M models use active or switchable engine mounts. In comfort modes they are softer, reducing vibration. In sporty modes, they become stiffer, which keeps the engine more stable and improves throttle response and steering precision.

These mounts are controlled electronically. A fault can trigger a warning or a change in comfort. A specialist can test them with diagnostic equipment. Our article on Adaptive M Suspension explains how other chassis systems on M cars change with driving modes.

Replacing engine mounts

Replacing engine mounts usually involves supporting the engine with a crane or support bar, removing the old mounts and fitting new ones with the correct torque values. On some models, other parts must be removed to reach the mounts.

Tips:

  • Replace both engine mounts at the same time, because they age together.
  • Consider replacing the gearbox mount as well.
  • Use quality parts that match the original specification.
  • Fix oil leaks first, or the new mounts will wear quickly.

After replacement, many owners notice a smoother idle and a more precise driving feel.

Performance mounts

Some owners fit stiffer performance mounts, especially for track use. They reduce engine movement and improve response, but they also increase vibration and noise in the cabin.

For a road car, original or original-equivalent mounts are usually the best choice. Performance mounts make sense mainly for track-focused cars where comfort is less important. Discuss your use with a specialist before choosing.

Checking mounts when buying

When buying a used BMW:

  • Watch the engine while a helper revs it gently with the bonnet open.
  • Feel for vibration at idle and in Drive on automatic models.
  • Listen for clunks when pulling away and changing gear.
  • Look for oil leaks near the mounts.

Worn mounts are not usually an expensive problem, but they can reduce comfort and precision. Include them in your negotiation if they need replacing. Our complete checklist for buying a used BMW covers other checks.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my BMW engine mounts are worn?

Vibration at idle, clunks when pulling away and visible engine movement when revving are the most common signs.

How long do BMW engine mounts last?

Often many years, but age, oil leaks, heat and hard driving can shorten their life.

Should I replace both engine mounts?

Yes, it is usually recommended because they age at a similar rate.

Are performance engine mounts good for road use?

They reduce engine movement but increase vibration and noise, so original mounts are usually better for road cars.
