BMW Auto Start-Stop switches the engine off when the car comes to a stop and restarts it when you want to drive on. It saves fuel and reduces emissions in town traffic.

Many owners notice that the system sometimes does not work, or they want to know how to turn it off. In most cases, the car is simply checking a list of conditions before switching the engine off. In this article we explain how the system works, why it does not always activate and what role the battery plays.

How BMW Auto Start-Stop works

BMW introduced Auto Start-Stop as part of its EfficientDynamics programme, and today it is fitted to almost every BMW with a combustion engine.

The principle is simple:

  • With an automatic gearbox: the engine switches off when the car stops and you keep your foot on the brake. It restarts when you release the brake.
  • With a manual gearbox: the engine switches off when you stop, select neutral and release the clutch. It restarts when you press the clutch.

The starter motor, battery and electrical system are designed for many more starts than in a car without the system. On mild hybrid models, the restart can be even smoother.

Why the engine sometimes does not switch off

BMW Auto Start-Stop only switches the engine off when certain conditions are met. The car checks many factors, including:

  • Engine temperature: the engine must be warm enough.
  • Battery charge: the battery must have enough charge to restart reliably.
  • Climate control: if the cabin needs strong heating, cooling or demisting, the engine keeps running.
  • Outside temperature: in very cold or hot weather, the system may stay inactive.
  • Steering angle: large steering movements can prevent a stop.
  • Seatbelt, doors and bonnet: the driver must be belted in and the doors and bonnet closed.
  • Driving mode: sporty modes often deactivate the system.
  • Gradient: on steep slopes the engine may keep running.
  • Recent movement: the car usually needs to have driven above a certain speed since the last stop.

A message or symbol in the instrument cluster often shows that the system is ready or not available.

The role of the battery

The battery is the most common reason why BMW Auto Start-Stop stops working. The car monitors the battery's state of charge and health. If the battery is weak or not fully charged, the system stays inactive to make sure the engine can always restart.

Cars with Auto Start-Stop normally use an AGM battery, which is designed for frequent starts and deep cycling. Replacing it with the wrong battery type can cause problems.

After a battery replacement, the new battery must be registered with the car's electronics. Without registration, the charging system may not work correctly and Auto Start-Stop may stay inactive. Our article on BMW battery registration explains why this step is important.

Short trips and stop-start traffic

Many short journeys do not give the alternator enough time to recharge the battery. In winter, with heating, lights and heated seats, the battery charge can fall further.

If you mainly drive short distances, you may notice that Auto Start-Stop works less often. A longer drive or charging the battery with a suitable charger can restore its charge. If the problem continues, a battery test by a workshop is a good idea.

Turning Auto Start-Stop off

You can deactivate the system with the button marked with an A, usually on the centre console. On most models, the system becomes active again each time you start the car.

Some owners use coding to change this default. Our article on BMW coding explains what can be changed and the risks involved. Any change to the vehicle's software can affect warranty and should be done carefully.

The system is designed to be safe for the engine and starter motor, so there is no technical need to deactivate it. Many owners simply switch it off in specific situations, such as heavy traffic, junctions where a quick start is needed or when parking.

Does Auto Start-Stop damage the engine?

BMW designed the engine, starter motor, bearings and battery for Auto Start-Stop. The engine is restarted while still warm and oil pressure builds up quickly.

The system only stops the engine when it is at a suitable temperature. Wear concerns are therefore generally small compared with the fuel saving in town traffic. Correct oil and regular servicing remain important. Our article on BMW M engine oil explains why oil quality matters.

When to have the system checked

Have the system checked if:

  • Auto Start-Stop has not worked for a long time, even after long drives.
  • A warning message about the battery or the charging system appears.
  • The engine restarts roughly or slowly.
  • Other electrical problems appear at the same time.

A workshop can test the battery, read the fault memory and check the battery registration. In many cases, a new correctly registered battery solves the problem.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my BMW Auto Start-Stop not working?

The most common reasons are a low or weak battery, a cold engine, climate control demand or a sporty driving mode.

Can I permanently turn off BMW Auto Start-Stop?

The button deactivates it until the next start. Coding can change the default, but software changes should be made carefully.

Does Auto Start-Stop damage a BMW engine?

The engine, starter and battery are designed for it, so normal use does not cause meaningful extra wear.

Do I need to register a new battery for Auto Start-Stop?

Yes. The battery must be registered so the charging system and Auto Start-Stop work correctly.
