The BMW M440i is the M Performance version of the second-generation 4 Series. Launched in 2020, it combines a 3.0-litre straight-six with mild hybrid support, a sporty chassis and the striking design of the 4 Series coupé, convertible and Gran Coupé.
It offers strong performance and everyday comfort at lower running costs than the full M4. In this article we explain the engine, the drive options, the three body styles, the driving experience, how it compares with the M4 and what to check when buying one.
The second-generation 4 Series
The G22 4 Series coupé was launched in 2020, followed by the G23 convertible and the G26 Gran Coupé. It is based on the 3 Series, but with its own design, lower roof and wider track.
Its large vertical kidney grille divided opinion, but the car itself received praise for its handling. Our article on BMW M vs M Performance vs M Sport explains where the M440i sits between the regular models and the M4.
The BMW M440i engine
The BMW M440i uses the B58 3.0-litre straight-six with a single twin-scroll turbocharger, producing around 374 hp in many markets. A 48-volt mild hybrid system supports the engine when accelerating and allows smoother restarts of the Auto Start-Stop system.
The engine is combined with an eight-speed Steptronic automatic gearbox. It delivers strong torque from low revs and a smooth, refined character. Our article on BMW Auto Start-Stop explains how mild hybrid systems help.
Drive options
Depending on the market and body style, the M440i was offered with:
- xDrive all-wheel drive, common in many markets and standard on some versions.
- Rear-wheel drive in some markets.
xDrive provides excellent traction in all weather, while rear-wheel drive offers a more playful character. An M Sport differential on the rear axle is fitted to many cars. Our article on M xDrive explains BMW's all-wheel drive systems.
Three body styles
- G22 coupé: the classic two-door sports coupé.
- G23 convertible: with a fabric roof, ideal for summer driving.
- G26 Gran Coupé: a four-door coupé with a large tailgate, offering more space for passengers and luggage.
The Gran Coupé is particularly popular because it combines the design of a coupé with the practicality of a family car.
The coupé has frameless door windows and two rear seats that are fine for shorter journeys. The convertible's fabric roof keeps weight down and opens quickly, even at low speeds. The Gran Coupé has a slightly higher roofline at the rear, which gives adults more headroom, and its tailgate makes loading bulky items easy. All three can be specified with similar equipment, so the choice mostly depends on how many people you carry and whether you want open-air driving.
Driving experience
The M440i is fast and composed. Its adaptive suspension provides a comfortable ride in normal modes and better body control in sport settings. The steering is precise, and the car feels stable at high speed.
It does not have the raw edge of the M4, but it is easier to enjoy every day. Many owners say it is the perfect balance between comfort and performance.
The engine sound is refined, with a sportier note in Sport mode. Our article on BMW Active Sound Design explains how BMW enhances sound inside the cabin.
M440i vs M4
Compared with the M4:
- Engine: the M4 uses the S58 M engine with much more power. Our article on the BMW S58 engine explains it.
- Chassis: the M4 has wider tracks, stiffer mounts and stronger brakes for track use.
- Gearbox: the M4 offers a manual gearbox in some versions; the M440i is automatic.
- Comfort: the M440i is softer and quieter.
- Running costs: the M440i is cheaper to insure, fuel and maintain.
Our comparison of the M4 G82 and F82 explains the M4 generations.
Running costs and maintenance
The M440i is relatively efficient for its performance, thanks to the mild hybrid system. Costs to consider include:
- Fuel, which depends heavily on driving style.
- Tyres and brakes, larger than regular models.
- Servicing with the correct approved oil.
- Gearbox fluid changes for long-term ownership. Our article on BMW transmission fluid explains why.
The B58 engine is generally robust when maintained.
Buying tips
When buying a used M440i:
- Check the service history.
- Look for coolant or oil leaks around the engine.
- Test the convertible roof on the G23.
- Check tyres and brakes, especially on cars driven hard.
