The BMW i5 M60 is the fastest electric version of the eighth-generation 5 Series. Launched in 2023, it combines two electric motors, all-wheel drive and M Performance tuning with the comfort and technology of BMW's executive saloon.

It replaces the V8-powered M550i as the sporty top model below the M5. In this article we explain how the BMW i5 M60 works, its power and performance, range and charging, comfort, the Touring version and how it compares with the M550i and M5.

A new kind of fast 5 Series

The G60 5 Series was designed from the start for petrol, diesel, hybrid and fully electric drivetrains. The electric models are called i5. The i5 M60 sits at the top of the electric range as an M Performance model.

It continues the role of earlier fast 5 Series models, such as the M550i, and gives buyers a fast, quiet and comfortable alternative for daily use. Many company car drivers in particular choose it because electric cars are often treated favourably by tax rules in several countries. Our article on the BMW M550i explains its V8-powered predecessor. Our article on BMW M vs M Performance vs M Sport explains where M Performance models sit.

How the BMW i5 M60 drivetrain works

The BMW i5 M60 uses:

  • Two electric motors, one on each axle, for all-wheel drive.
  • A combined output of around 600 hp at launch, with the highest figure available in a boost mode.
  • Very high torque available from standstill.
  • A large high-voltage battery in the floor, which lowers the centre of gravity.

The system distributes power between the axles depending on grip and driving style. In normal driving, the car can be very efficient, while full power is available instantly when needed.

Performance

The i5 M60 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in under four seconds, according to BMW's launch figures. In everyday driving, the instant torque makes overtaking and motorway merging effortless.

The chassis is tuned with adaptive suspension, and many cars have Integral Active Steering, which helps the large saloon feel agile. Our article on BMW Integral Active Steering explains the system. The car is heavy because of the battery, which you notice in tight corners and under heavy braking.

Range and charging

Range depends on the wheels, temperature, speed and driving style. The official WLTP figures at launch were several hundred kilometres, and real-world range is usually lower, especially in winter and at high motorway speeds.

The i5 M60 supports fast DC charging at high power, which allows a large part of the battery to be recharged in around half an hour at a suitable charger. At home, an AC wallbox is the most convenient solution.

Tips for better range:

  • Pre-condition the battery and cabin while plugged in.
  • Use efficient driving modes for everyday trips.
  • Keep tyre pressures correct. Our article on BMW fuel economy tips includes advice that also helps electric cars.

Comfort and technology

The i5 M60 is quiet and refined, as expected from a 5 Series. Inside, it offers BMW's curved display, the latest iDrive and advanced driver assistance systems. Our article on BMW Driving Assistant Professional explains these systems.

IconicSounds Electric gives the car a designed sound in sporty modes. Our article on the BMW i4 M50 explains how this sound was developed.

The i5 M60 Touring

BMW also offers the i5 M60 as a Touring estate, combining electric M Performance with the practicality of a large boot. It is one of the few fast electric estate cars on the market and a practical alternative to the M5 Touring for drivers who want electric power. Our article on the BMW M5 Touring history explains the petrol super estates.

i5 M60 vs M550i vs M5

  • i5 M60: electric, very quick in real-world driving, quiet and comfortable, with low running costs when charged at home.
  • M550i: V8 petrol, strong sound and character, easier long-distance refuelling, higher fuel costs.
  • M5: the full M car, with the highest performance and track ability, and a hybrid V8 in the latest generation.

The i5 M60 is ideal for drivers who mainly cover distances within its range and can charge at home or work. For frequent long journeys without fast chargers, a petrol or hybrid model may be easier.

Ownership tips

  • Tyres wear faster because of weight and instant torque.
  • Brakes wear slowly thanks to energy recovery, but they should still be used regularly.
  • Battery health: avoid keeping the battery at full charge for long periods unless needed.
  • Software updates can improve functions over time.

When buying a used i5 M60, ask for a battery health report and check the condition of tyres and wheels.
